Whole-system duct and dryer vent check with before-and-after photos - you see exactly what came out of your vents
That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.
Allergies Worse Indoors
What’s Happening
If your allergy symptoms get worse the moment you step inside and ease up when you leave, your home’s air ducts are almost certainly circulating dust, mold spores, pet dander, and other allergens every time the system runs. This is one of the most common complaints we hear – and it almost always traces back to ductwork that hasn’t been cleaned in years.
Your HVAC system pulls air from every room in the house, conditions it, and pushes it back out through the same network of ducts. Whatever has built up inside those ducts – dust, debris, biological growth, old insulation fibers – gets redistributed into the air you breathe, dozens of times a day. Sneezing fits that start when the fan kicks on, itchy eyes that flare up in the bedroom but not outside, a cough that lingers all winter: these are your ducts talking. The fix isn’t another antihistamine. It’s cleaning the system that’s spreading the problem.
Why It Happens
Accumulated Dust and Debris in the Duct Lining
Dust settles in ducts the same way it settles on a bookshelf – just invisibly. Over three to five years without a cleaning, that layer gets thick enough to break loose in chunks every time the blower motor kicks on. You’ll notice a faint musty smell right when the system starts, or thin lines of dust on the wall just below your supply vents. Pull a vent cover off and shine a flashlight down the opening – if you see a gray, felt-like coating on the metal, you’ve found your culprit.
Mold or Mildew Growth Inside the System
Anywhere warm, dark, and slightly damp exists inside your ductwork, mold can grow. This is especially common near the air handler, in flexible duct sections that sag and collect condensation, and around return vents in humid rooms like bathrooms or laundry areas. The giveaway smell is earthy and sharp – sometimes compared to a wet basement – and it tends to be strongest at the vent closest to the air handler. If you notice that smell cycling through the house whenever the system runs, stop using the fan setting and call.
A Dirty or Bypassed Air Filter
A filter that’s been in place too long stops catching anything and starts restricting airflow enough that the system pulls unfiltered air around it. Some homeowners remove a clogged filter and forget to replace it entirely – leaving the air handler completely exposed to whatever floats past. Check your filter now: if it looks like a gray blanket, or if there’s no filter in the slot at all, that’s a significant part of what you’re breathing. Replacing it is something you can do today, though it won’t clean the debris that’s already made it through.
Pet Dander and Biological Material Locked in Ductwork
Pet hair and dander work their way into the return ducts and compact into mats near the grilles. Unlike dust, dander carries proteins that are potent allergens for many people – and a mat of it sitting in a duct gets redistributed in fine particles every single time the system cycles. If your symptoms started or worsened after adding a pet to the household, and especially if they’re worst in rooms farthest from the return vent, this is almost certainly contributing. No air freshener or purifier addresses it at the source.
What to Do Right Now
- Check and replace your air filter. Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light source. If you can’t see light through it, replace it before running the system again. Note the MERV rating on the frame – your local Cardinal Air Duct Cleaning technician will want to confirm the right rating for your system when they arrive.
- Stop running the fan-only mode. If you’ve been running the blower without heating or cooling to circulate air, pause that. Fan-only cycles move air without any conditioning, which means they’re also moving whatever’s in the ducts without any humidity control – making allergen distribution worse.
- Photograph your supply and return vents. Pull the covers off two or three vents – one supply, one return, one in a bedroom – and take a photo of what you see inside. This gives the technician useful information before they even open the truck, and it gives you a before-and-after reference once the job is done.
- Don’t try to clean inside the ducts yourself. A vacuum hose pushed into a duct opening moves debris around more than it removes it. Proper extraction requires a HEPA-rated vacuum system with enough suction to pull material through the entire duct run – not a shop vac at one end. Leave the inside of the ductwork alone until the tech arrives.
- Note when symptoms are worst. Write down which rooms, what time of day, and whether the system was running. This pattern helps the technician prioritize where to look first and which sections may need closer attention.
How We Fix It
When your local Cardinal Air Duct Cleaning technician arrives, the first thing they do is walk the system – every supply and return vent, the air handler, and the main trunk lines. Before any equipment comes off the truck, you get a written price for the full job. That number doesn’t change at the door.
The cleaning itself combines a Rotobrush rotary brush system, which agitates buildup from the duct walls, with a Nikro HEPA-rated vacuum running in negative pressure to extract it all out of the system rather than just loosening it. Abatement Technologies containment equipment keeps debris from escaping into the living space while the work is happening. If filtration products are needed – Honeywell, Aprilaire, or Guardsman units – those get discussed and priced separately before installation.
A thorough air duct cleaning on a standard home typically takes two to three hours. The service is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something isn’t right, your local team comes back and makes it right – no argument, no charge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, dirty ducts are a direct and common cause of worsened indoor allergy symptoms. When dust, mold spores, pet dander, and similar particles accumulate inside ductwork, the HVAC system distributes them throughout the house every time it runs. It doesn’t mean your ducts are the only factor – pollen coming through windows, carpet fibers, and upholstered furniture all contribute – but if symptoms are worse when the system is running and better when it’s off, the ducts are almost certainly involved.
If anyone in the household has asthma, is immunocompromised, or is having respiratory symptoms that feel more serious than seasonal allergies, don’t wait – call (737) 727-2314 today. For otherwise healthy adults with irritating but manageable symptoms, a short delay while you schedule is unlikely to make things significantly worse. That said, every additional week the system runs is another week of recirculation. There’s no upside to waiting once you’ve identified the source.
Every job done under The Relay Visibility Guarantee includes before-and-after photos of the ductwork – taken by the technician, shared with you, and kept on file. You’ll see what was in there before the brushes and vacuum ran, and what it looks like after. That documentation is part of every booking, not something you have to ask for.
Air duct cleaning is a scheduled service – not an emergency dispatch – so availability depends on your local team’s current schedule. The fastest way to find out when your local Cardinal Air Duct Cleaning team can get to you is to call (737) 727-2314. A live person picks up, checks the schedule, and gives you a real arrival window – not a four-hour block, and not a next-business-day callback.
