Whole-system duct and dryer vent check with before-and-after photos - you see exactly what came out of your vents
That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.
Rooms that never get enough air
What’s Happening
When one or more rooms in your home consistently feel stuffy, too warm, or too cold no matter how long the system runs, the most common cause is restricted airflow inside your duct system – either from years of built-up debris, a blockage, or a duct that has come loose or collapsed. This is not a thermostat problem and it is rarely a refrigerant problem. In most cases, a professional air duct cleaning combined with a duct integrity check resolves it.
Your HVAC system moves air through a network of supply and return ducts. When that network gets clogged or damaged, the pressure balance breaks. Some rooms get too much air, some get almost none, and the system works harder and harder trying to compensate. The result is uneven temperatures, higher energy bills, and a furnace or air handler that runs longer than it should. Most homeowners live with this for years before finding out the fix is straightforward.
Why It Happens
Duct buildup from years of normal use
Dust, pet dander, and debris accumulate on the interior walls of sheet metal ducts over time. A thin coating restricts airflow the same way a kinked garden hose does – gradually, then noticeably. Pull the cover off one of your supply registers and shine a flashlight inside. If the walls are visibly coated in gray fuzz or you can see debris settled in the bottom of the duct, buildup is almost certainly reducing what reaches the room.
A disconnected or collapsed flex duct section
Flexible ductwork – the silver, accordion-style tubing often used in attics, crawl spaces, and tight runs – can sag, kink, or pull apart at its connections over time. A fully disconnected section dumps conditioned air into the attic or crawl space instead of the room. If one room went from fine to almost no airflow suddenly, and you can safely look into your attic without climbing above the hatch, check whether any flex duct looks kinked flat or has separated from a collar fitting.
A blocked or partially closed damper
Most duct systems have manual dampers – small levers or wing nuts on the duct branches near the air handler. They are set once by the installer and then forgotten. If someone closed one to redirect air during a renovation and never reopened it, that branch is starved. Look at the main supply trunk near your furnace or air handler. Each branch should have a lever roughly parallel to the duct (open) rather than across it (closed).
A dirty or undersized return air path
Every supply register pumps air into a room, but that air needs a path back through the return system or pressure builds up and the room goes positive – meaning air is fighting against itself. A clogged return grille, a missing undercut on a bedroom door, or a return that was simply never big enough can all produce the same stagnant, stuffy feeling. Pull the return grille off the wall and look at the filter behind it. If it is packed solid, that alone may be your whole problem.
What to Do Right Now
- Check every supply register in the problem room. Put your hand over it while the system is running. If airflow is weak or absent, the problem is upstream. Note which registers are weak and which feel strong – this tells a technician exactly where to look first.
- Check and replace your air filter. A filter that has not been changed in several months can restrict airflow to the entire system. Hold it up to a light source. If no light passes through, swap it out before your appointment – a clean Honeywell or Aprilaire filter costs a few dollars and occasionally solves the whole issue on its own.
- Pull the return grille and photograph what you see. Before-and-after photos are part of how we document the work anyway, so having your own “before” shot of the return cavity is useful and costs you nothing.
- Check any accessible damper levers near the air handler. This is a safe visual check – no tools, no disassembly. Just look. If a lever is clearly positioned across the duct rather than along it, turn it parallel and see if the room improves.
- Do not try to access flex duct runs in the attic or crawl space yourself. Working in an unconditioned attic or tight crawl space carries real fall and heat risks, and disturbing a damaged duct without the right containment equipment can push debris into your living space. If you suspect a disconnected section, photograph what you can see from the hatch and call your local Cardinal Air Duct Cleaning team – that is exactly the kind of thing we are set up to handle safely.
How We Fix It
When your local Cardinal Air Duct Cleaning technician arrives, the first thing they do is a system walkthrough: every supply register, every return grille, the air handler, and any accessible duct runs. Before a single duct is touched, you get a written price. Not a ballpark – a written number for this specific job, agreed before any work starts. That is how every Cardinal job works, no exceptions.
If the issue is debris buildup, we run a Rotobrush rotary brush system through the duct branches to break up the compacted material, then pull it out with a Nikro HEPA-rated vacuum so it never re-enters your air. Abatement Technologies containment units keep the rest of the house clean while we work. If a damaged or disconnected duct section is found, the repair is documented, quoted in writing, and backed by a written guarantee – plus a free second visit if the repair fails. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every job we do, not just select ones. A full air duct cleaning typically takes two to three hours depending on system size; HVAC cleaning adds time if the coil and air handler need attention. Most customers are back to normal the same day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Restricted airflow is not an emergency the way a gas leak is, but it does get worse on its own – it does not get better. A clogged or damaged duct system makes your HVAC work harder on every cycle, which shortens the life of the blower motor and heat exchanger. If the issue is a disconnected duct running through a crawl space or unconditioned attic, conditioned air is also escaping your home continuously, which adds up on your energy bills faster than most people expect. The sooner it is assessed, the less it costs you over time. Call (737) 727-2314 and we can get eyes on it.
Possibly, but in most cases with an existing home that used to be comfortable, the system size has not changed – the ductwork condition has. A technician can tell the difference between a capacity problem and an airflow restriction problem quickly by measuring supply output at the register versus expected output for the system. Replacing or upgrading equipment before ruling out duct issues is an expensive detour that most homeowners regret.
Every Cardinal Air Duct Cleaning job includes before-and-after photo documentation of the work – it is part of The Relay Visibility Guarantee, which covers every booking. You see the duct walls before we start and after we finish. The digital invoice, sent to your phone as a payable link, itemizes what was done. If the work is not right, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and make it right – no argument, no charge.
Availability depends on your area and the schedule your local Cardinal team is running, so the honest answer is: call and ask. A live person picks up at (737) 727-2314 around the clock – no voicemail loop, no next-business-day callback. When your appointment is set, you get a live, trackable arrival window so you are not waiting around guessing. Call (737) 727-2314 and find out what the earliest opening looks like.
